New graduate nurses unable to find work Empty New graduate nurses unable to find work

Unfortunately, this is a growing problem based on the media's and public perception that there is a "nursing shortage". In fact, we have more than enough nurses here in the US that have changed fields or retired due to unreasonable workloads.

Now, the problem is compounded by hospitals that refuse to hire new nurses who lack the required 1 to 2 years of working experience. The new graduates ask " how can we get the experience if no one will hire us?" Many people are going into the nursing profession now because they believe it to be "recession proof", but realize after they have committed to obtaining their nursing license that they can't find employment. Hospitals have hiring freezes, so the few positions offered will go to experienced nurses.

Another problem is the importing of foreign nurses who are also hired over a new US graduate nurse. The phillipines has chosen to be an exporter of their nurses to the US and other countries. Their nurses are expected to send money home to the tune of 1.6 billion dollars in 2005. Many do not become legal citizens of the US and I personally know of a few who plan to collect their Social Security checks in the Phillipines when they retire. I guess there is nothing legally wrong with this situation, but personally feel we should be taking care of our own citizens first.

New graduate nurses unable to find work Empty Re: New graduate nurses unable to find work

One of the reasons for the Filipino nurses, is that there medical and nursing schools were started by Americans at the turn of the century in the Philippines. In this way they are one of the few overseas nursing and medical pools recognized by the AMA. I am not sure that they are undercutting wages, and they certainly should not be if thats the case. It is one of the many problems facing those newly entering the work force at this time. I don't know if nurses are fairing better than other college graduates, I have not real examined the data.

Thank you for bring it to our attention work horse.

An article from a Filipino website written in 2009 sheds a little more light on this topic. An excerpt:

" Herrera underscored the need for nursing students to specialize in geriatric nursing or the provision of nursing services to the elderly to enable them to pursue their profession.

“The populations of America, Japan and other industrialized countries are getting very old. There is tremendous demand now for geriatric nurses,” he said.

Herrera added that if the country would continue to produce and export nurses, “we might as well make our programs highly responsive to the demands of the global market.”

“This way, fresh nursing graduates would readily obtain gainful employment overseas,” he said, warning that the huge oversupply of nurses is keeping their wages in the local front “even more depressed.”

“We now have more than half a million nurses looking for jobs, including the 67,220 who passed the local licensure examinations in July 2008 and February this year,” he added."

New graduate nurses unable to find work Empty New Graduate Nurses WITH Experience

Post  rachealanna Sun Mar 07, 2010 8:59 pm

Another problem facing New Grad Nurses is that those who have experience in the nursing field, for instance LVN/LPN or Military Medics, are not being considered for any of this experience. The experience is stated as having to be "RN" experience. One of the only differences between LVN/LPNs and RN is that an RN can administer medications through an IV and give blood products on a physician's order. There are also nursing care plans that are made only by RNs. Military Medical Enlisted Personnel are able, and even allowed, to do many of the tasks of an RN including administering IVs and IV Medications-including some tasks that RN's do not do, such as suturing wounds.

Hospital Liability Insurance could be part of the problem. Rates on every kind of insurance are increasing and having a higher percentage of New Graduate (supposed "inexperienced") Nurses could increase the premium for the hospitals who are so desperately trying to turn a profit right now.

Health Insurance could also be part of the problem. There are so many plans that are "tightening their belts" and not paying for the services and medications deemed beneficial to these patients.

You guys are getting in to a serious subject "heath care" this thread could take on a life of its own. One thing not to get duped on; thats tort reform. Any time you hear that kind of talk its never good for the patient. Its a lame argument used against plaintiffs bar guaranteeing reduced costs on premiums- have none of it.

I don't know the answer to this one, but it's an argument I've heard in the past. Somehow, the military gets around what would be outside the scope of practice in the US. Of course, on US soil nurses cannot suture wounds ( that would be practicing medicine) , but you would think there would be some way you could get points for having some of those kind of experiences in the military.

I don’t know about nurses, but my sister in law is a RN and seams to find jobs pretty easy, also I know around here the hospital hardly ever hires nurses, mostly RN's. Also don’t you get experience in collage, I thought you spend like a year or two in "on the field" training? You could try getting experience at old folks home, or private businesses, or even free clinics.

Hope I helped Very Happy
